I've been trying to figure this out, I have seen posts on getVar() but that doesn't work and I have seen posts on using the clientapi but there is no really good instructions that help someone with DNN 6 installed....I need to get some variables into javascript from the server side code.

What are you trying to do. If it's data that's available server side then why not process it at the server?

Basically I am doing all my work on the jquery side. I want to pull down a user id and pass it to my db to do other work with a query through a web service. I also want to take a variable from the settings area and decide if I want to show data whether that variable is true or false.

To do this your web service needs to share the same authentication token as the web site.  Check out the  AspNetCompatibilityRequirements attribute.

To show/hide data based on a settings value sounds like it should be done server side.  Why send the extra data out to the client just for the client to hide it?
