So if I want a fully functional forum I *ONLY* need that and no other features of a CMS like news, blogs, wiki, gallery or the like? Seems like you are being a bit defensive in your retort with such flawed logic. Call my crazy but I want a working and feature filled forum AND other functions too... I know.. weird..

That said you seemed to miss my point yet make it for me at the same time. Yes YAF is feature rich and ready for prime time. Half your battle done for you. So why invest time in AF where you need to re-invent the wheel in basic functionally AND the social aspect when you can just fork YAF and work just on the social hooks and related? Seems like you are making yourself twice as much work for no reason. That's my point.

All that said, I wrote off AF, too little to late at this point. I appreciate the sentiment but I simply see no need to go backwards and wait for you to play catch up when I have a viable alternative. Does YAF write to the journal or other fluff social features? No and frankly I nor my members care less as I am not trying to make a facebook lite. But it does have a powerful PM, non-buggy avatars, working whos online, several editor options, granular security, recent post module, member galleries  and built in chat module. To me that supersedes journal hooks and playing the waiting game.

Your mileage may vary.

LOL who's the one getting defensive and missing points?

I'm not trying to convince you to go back to AF or that YAF isn't a better solution in your case. I'm saying that IF (like me) tight integration with the core social platform is important, than AF has some advantages.

Like Jason said, the integration with other aspects of DNN is the likely reason for going with AF. Some people want that and I *may* be one of them once it's all done.

Until then, YAF is a strong alternative. I've used it and like it a lot but I also like to have options.

Mark, I simply don't get what the big deal is over 'user x posted y' journal entries is all about. That's why forums have 'last posts' modules. I simply find the journal has to much going on as my users felt overwhelmed and never really used it. Even if you trim it down it still has a lot of notices more then most members want to wade though. The commercial version of AF and AS were great, the new versions however are stripped down, buggy, inconsistent messes. As someone who used to develop software many years ago I would have NEVER released these products, especially AF, in the condition they were. Who in their right mind convinces himself lets releases a forum that not only has missing and broken functions but no recent posts ability? I am sorry but it seems to me to be honest the project is a mess trying to play catch up at the expense of the community. And I prefer not to be a beta tester on my live site. But perhaps that's just me.

I wasn't a prior AF user so I can't speak to how the product worked pre-DNN purchase but I do like that they are looking to move forward with the CMS. Initially adding AF, along with the social pieces, seemed like a great move since people want these features. Like I said, I may be one of them as long as it fits my needs.

As far as the current AF is concerened, I've tested it lightly with good results but admit the lack of a "recent posts" module is odd. This is something that should've been part of the initial roll out of the new AF.

Again, I think it's good that we have alternatives like YAF. I was a fan of theirs well before DNN and I love the fact that they created a module for it for DNN. Who knows? Maybe that'll set a high standard for AF and press DNN to produce a better product.
