I'm running 2 portals on an install of 6.2.1 on Windows 2003 server using a separate SQL 2005 server.

I'm looking to setup a new web server (new, faster 64-bit hardware) either Windows Server 2008R2 or 2012 and need to migrate the DNN install to it.

What version should I upgrade to on 2003 before migrating (if any)...and how do I migrate from IIS6 to IIS7.5 or 8?  I plan to upgrade SQL to 2008 or 2012, but that should be the easy part.

Any help/link would be greatly appreciated!

Jason,

for DNN 7 you need at least Windows 2008 Server, check this for other requirements.

I would recommend Windows 2012 and enough RAM. Then you can install SQL Server 2012 64-bit on it, backup your DNN database(s) and installation(s) (a ZIP file is enough!), set up the web site(s) in IIS 8 with the same type of AppPool (.Net version, Pipeline mode) you have on your old installation set up and try if it works. If yes, change the .Net version to 4 and the pipeline mode to "Integrated" (if not already done).

Then, apply the update. Should do without any issues, if it works fine on your installation(s) of 6.2.1.

Or, you can do it the other way round: Change the .Net version to 4 and pipeline mode to integrated, then back it up and move it to the new server (when it works). Anyway, the first thing you should do is always a backup of the database(s) and the installation(s).

Best wishes
Michael

Thanks Michael, that makes sense.

The new server has 32GB RAM so the plan is to install Hyper-V and run both web and SQL as guests.  This would give me flexibility and isolation using only 1 physical.

Coming from IIS6, I'll do your first path and migrate 6.2.1 as-is, then work on upgrading to v7 from there.

My question is, can I simply ZIP the folder on IIS6, backup the db from SQL2005... restore the DB on 2012, unzip the site on IIS8, create a site/app pool as classic, change the web.config to point at new DB instance, then fire it up and it 'should' work?

I'm going to start installing the new server within the next couple days so I'll be able to try it soon.

Thanks.

Jason,

yes you can :-) The only thing you should take care of ist, that when you run SQL Server and IIS on different (even virtual) machines, you have to use SQL Authentication instead of integrated to access the database. (Maybe that's possible, but I did not find a way to use the App Pool identity as a login for SQL Server, when it's running on a different machine - but I did not invest too much time to investigate that).

And always rememeber: Save early, save often...

Best wishes
Michael

I've been working on his on and off the last couple months. I've copied the site to the win2012 server and it runs, but it's very slow. I've installed the latest 7.x version upgrade and it runs, but it's still very slow.

the database has been on SQL 2012 for a while and there's no issue there (exiting 6.2.1 on win2003 runs fast with the SQL 2012 backend)

Anyone have thoughts why its so slow?
