Hello,

My name is Feodor Fitsner. Some of you might know me as I was the developer of hosting control panel DotNetPanel (its first version was implemented as DotNetNuke modules, btw) which eventually became an open-source project WebsitePanel.

For the last year I’ve been in a process of creating Appveyor - cloud-based deployment automation solution for ASP.NET apps and finally got some exciting results that I’m rushing to share with you!

Today, in Valentine’s Day, to express my love to DotNetNuke project and its community :) I’d like to present to your attention:

Complete guide to deployment automation of DotNetNuke websites

In short, this article will give you the steps required to install DNN 7 on Windows 8; you will know how to prepare Windows Server 2012 for DNN deployment, how to deploy DNN from development machine to staging, move it from staging to production and create backups; at the end there are instructions on how to deploy DNN to Azure VM with Azure SQL database and to AWS EC2 instance with RDS database.

This article is not an attempt to advertise yet another “shiny” start-up, but it is a Solution that is very specific to DotNetNuke and allows you entirely focus on delivering great websites and not spending hours in RDC.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Though I feel we are very close to what can be considered a must-have deployment solution it’s still only the beginning and we have a ton of ideas what can be done (like, for example, automating major upgrades). We are keen to further evolve the system, with your help guys, to create the-best-solution-ever for deploying DotNetNuke websites.

In the meantime, I have a few questions and would be happy if you have a minute to give your thoughts:
  • Do you use a source control for your DNN projects?
  • How and who does usually deploy in your org? Do you have any formal publishing process?
  • How do you do UAT with your customers?
  • Is there any interest in supporting web clusters?

Let’s talk! If you are deploying DNN manually by dragging ZIPs and BAKs you are doing it wrong! :)

My email is feodor@appveyor.com - feel free to poke me with your questions or ideas! More about me on LinkedIn.

Best regards,
Feodor

Just some props for Feodor.

I have worked with him over the years because his DotNetPanel supported products where I worked. He writes good software and keeps things up to date really well. I think that any project he is working on is worth looking at.
