I have a problem I can barely believe.  A year and a half ago I moved our DNN 5.6.3 site to a hosting company called DNN4Less.  Their support of DNN has been adequate; their support of email has been terrible and I want to move my site. I'm very familiar with moving DNN sites - I have a test copy running on my Win7 laptop.  I know that you dump the database to a .BAK file, and copy all the files, and then restore everything.  I have this documented for my own use, as I don't do it very often.

About 6 months ago, DNN4Less sort of changed their name to Chillox (except they still use the old name), and as part of their reorg, they installed a Plesk control panel with ASP.NET Enterprise Manager provided to deal with the database. ASP.NET Enterprise Manager, as provided here, has no function to create a .BAK file that I can download.  The Plesk configuration provides a Backup Manager function which creates an XML file of either the "domain configuration" or the "domain configuration and content."  There appears to be no function in Plesk to RESTORE a site, only to back it up.  I asked support today how I create a SQL backup of my database and they told me to use the Backup Manager.

 Frankly this has me concerned.  If I can't back up the database to a standard .BAK file, I don't know how to move the site. Can someone direct me for instructions on restoring a site that's been backed up in XML?  Are there other backup options I can apply?

It turns out that the Plesk Backup Manager will do a .BAK file if you specify that file extension when you give the name of the backup file.  Written instructions to that effect don't exist; you have to open a trouble ticket and ask the support guys. I'll try recreating my local test site from such a backup when I get SQL and IIS rebuilt on my new laptop.

 In the meantime, I'm still curious about the possible use of the XML backup file that the Backup Manager defaults to.   Can one restore a DNN site from an XML backup??  Has anyone done it?  Are there tools other than Plesk that can use it?

I've never heard of a back-up and/or restore using XML Files in SQL Server. Unless you can find something outlining the process, I'd say no.

Thanks, Mark - you confirm my suspicions.  Fortunately it does seem to be possible to back up in the traditional way.  And these people advertise themselves as DNN experts!

@hedera

I am really not sure why you could not do the database backup using our Control Panel in first attempt.

Its very common in MSSQL to restore the DB backup with .BAK file, which Plesk or any other popular Control Panel can do for you. All you have to do is add (.bak) extension in the end of the backup name (backup-file-name.bak)

There are millions of user using the Plesk Panel, its sounds to me that you are simply not familiar with its interface.

Even though we highly value your business, its still your choice to stay with us or move to a different provider, if you wish to move to another host simply submit a ticket in our support desk to get the full backup of your website and hopefully your new host will be able to restore your website at their server.

As far as email problem, yes we had some issues last week but they have been resolved and we do not have a single complain at this time, again, if you have any issue you should contact the support to solve that for you.

Thank you
