I don't see anything good from making this kind of change. What happens after the site is launched? No changes need to be made after that point?

I don't see the harm in simply having a login page that only the host/admin can access (You can delete all of the other non-essential users).

All changes will be made from a pre-production environment. and then using a db tool like SQL Compare we can update production without having to login.

Just change the skin on the live server so that it does not include the login tag - that should keep people out

<dnn:login id="dnnLogin" cssclass="LoginLink" runat="server">

You cannot however - DELETE - login.aspx - since it does not exist in the system anyway - its just an internal dynamic remapping.

Howver, you could also look at adding a friendly url remapping in Host Settings to remap login.asxp back to default - seem to recall that they friendly url remapper fires before the interal login.aspx remapper/

If for whatever reason you did need to actually force a login on the live site then all you would need to do is change the skin so it included the login tag again.

NOTE however that I assume in addition to sql compare - you will also be uploading / comparing the contents of the actual file system as well.

Or - the other option

 - setup a custom login page on your site
 - make a simple custom redirector module and place it on that new custom login page along with the dnn login module

In that custom redirect module you can easily do tests for the IP address of the client browser  or hosting server location and simply have it kick those that are not allowed to be in there back to the default.aspx page.

We do this sort of thing with a number of sites when we are doing site admin and dont want users logged in for example.

In most of our cases we just display a message saying login not currently available - but you could simply to a straight redirect.
