Is it possible to have nested panes (smaller pane inside a bigger one)? If it's not possible, are there any workarounds or alternatives?

You might want to explain why you think you need this.  It would help us suggest an alternative.

We can develop skin in which one or more smaller panes can be accommodated inside one large  pane.

For this, you will have to adjust the size of one or more smaller div inside one large div.
We can do this either by using css classes or inline styles.

That sounds more like nesting DiVs which is possible.  Nesting panes doesn't work, DNN can't identify pane levels.

Jeff.
