Robert,

have you changed the compatibility mode of the restored database, or is it still on 2005?

To do so, you can use the following query:

USE [master]
GO
ALTER DATABASE [databaseName] SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 100
GO

Best wishes
Michael

I ran the following:

SELECT name, compatibility_level FROM sys.databases

It returned compatibility_mode = 100 [Sql Server 2008]

When I restore an older db [dataset, backup, from a 2005 system] to a new db [2008 system] does it make any difference?  In other words is the backup dataset coded differently?  That might tell me how to 'convert'...  It probably is only easy in my mind...

Bob H.

p.s.   What I still need to try is incrementally stepping through the 'upgrade' process.  That involves researching which 'bigger' steps are safe to take.  I got so screwed up with crap lingering in my 3.x to 5.x databases through upgrades a couple of years ago that I rebuilt totally at 5.6.2.  DNN sorely needs a portal import/export utility that is dependable [100%, 4.0]  Most seem to agree.  It surely is harder than it sounds...  What is there works well when it works.

Robert,

when you restore a backup from an SQL Server 2005 to an SQL Server 2008, this database will run in 2005 (90) mode and has to be switched to 2008 (100). But this has propably already be done.

I agree: Upgrading to a new major release is often quite painful and needs a lot of testing and finding an upgrade path.

Best wishes
Michael

Right now I'm sick of the prospect.  6.x works for now.  I need to find something better.  I cannot re-build dozens of sites from the ground up with every major release.

Bob,

normally the problem with upgrading is not the core itself. In many cases it is the skin, or there are some third-party modules that are problematic.

If you need any extension upgrade with the DNN upgrade, this is quite easy. Just unzip the installation file, put the package into the Install/Module folder (or Install/Skin if it is a skin etc.), and then copy the whole stuff to you DNN folder and run the upgrade. The extension will automatically update then.

Anyway, I always recommend to uprade in a test environment before upgrading the production site - even for minor upgrades.

Best wishes
Michael
