Our web server was just cloned so that we can have a staging environment. What steps do I need to take so that the database on the production server is not written to?

Here is what I am thinking - modify the connection strings in web.config on the clone so it references Database_test instead of Database and then rename Database to Database_test. Is this all I need to do to be 100% safe from overwriting the live server? I am particularly nervous because the 1st thing I intend to do with the staging environment is upgrade DNN CE 5.6.2 to the current version 7.

Your feedback is welcome and very much appreciated.

Hello Kyle,

Any sort of staging you do should not be done on the live site or database. If you are looking to do this and not have any chance of affecting your live site or database you would need to clone the site completely (meaning DNN files and the database) and clone that over so that it's separate from the live site. This will give you a sandbox to play in that is on a different application pool, separate site files, and separate database.

Also I am not certain that you perform an upgrade like that because the database is tied to the web.config file via machine keys and you may not be able to connect to the new database just by the connection string. I think you're best and safest way to do this is in a completely separate staging environment.
