So that means that even when you would find a way to get an element to not become a pane, it would be a control and DNN does not detect runt=server controls inside a control as panes.
A way to address the panes might be by simply search them by ID, or add a control before it and find it's siblings

Would an opt-out be a thing to suggest as a dnn improvement?
It seems to me like that could make skins more dynamic, allow a skin designer to make changes to the skin based on settings/state e.g. different background when admin is logged in)

I'm currently building a skin where you can vary certain things based on certain settings. If you don't set a page logo, you get a different kind of header.

Or am I just doing some silly thing nobody should ever want to do (via the skin)?

IMHO it would be a nice enhancement to get a property telling DNN not to use a specific server div or td as a pane, please feel free to post your suggestion into User Voice tracker.

Sebastian,
I think the issue here is that panes are only found when not wrapped in another control. It will not be an easy fix I think as that would make the search for panes recursive (with performance implications).

BTW, you can hide panes on pre-render AFAIR.

Timo, did I really misunderstood the original question?
As far as I understood, Rolands want to be able to include a div runat=server, which is NOT recognized as a pane. IMHO it should be possible for the DNN parser to skip the conversion, if there is e.g. a parameter dnnIgnorePane="true".
