GUIDs?

I don't really understand the philosophy of GUID's that keep being replaced and are not modifiable.  Each time I have had to do a DNN upgrade?  It fails and has blown up the site, forcing me to reinstall DNN.  I've never seen a software product fail upgrading so often as DNN.

These software upgrade failures are costing real life time and money.  This is one of the number one problems I bring up to DNN evangelists, as MOSS, DRUPAL and JOOMLA never fail as often as a DNN 3, 4, 5,6,7.  I have to purchase modules again each single time you release an inferior upgrade.

Is there some way to put back my previous GUID into a new instllation?  If not, why not?

A lot of vendors use their copy protections based on GUIDS.

To me it seems like a bit of a sham to keep this type of policy up ... having no incentive to fix all these upgrade failures and letting vendors and the DOTNETNUKE store to make more profits by having users re-purchase all their moidules again.

And I seriously doubt I am the only DNN admin who has encountered this situation.  failed upgrade, site down, trying to fix it, restoring won't work, remaining in a previous version or upgrading and biting the bullet and repurchasing all modules again just to stay current...

For shame...

Is this the community edition? There is no copy protection in community edition - no idea about pro edition.

IME DNN most times upgrades fine. Certainly it's not normal to repurchase modules.

Tell us what actually happens in your upgrade and we may be able to help you.

GUIDs are just generated during install for the installation and each website inside, but the system itself does not rely on it, if necessary, you may replace it with the value from a previous website, if you switch for upgrades. However, you should usually be able to upgrade an existing DNN install just in place, without the need of managing GUID values around.
