Windows 2012, DNN CE 7.1, AD provider 5.06.

I have AD auth working but I've discovered an odd behavior that I can't quite control.  If a user in the specified autologin subnet hits the website for the first time it properly redirects to  the windowssignin.aspx page and authenticates them.  IF the user gets the popup and cancels out they are shows the 401.2 error message (as expected).

The problem comes in when the user returns to the site from the same machine - it no longer routes them to the windowssignin.aspx page.  The only way it seems I can get it to reroute is to clear all the browser cache and cookies on the machine.  Is there something somewhere that controls this behavior?

It's a cookie that's created by IIS and you have to wait for it to timeout (usually sometime between 30 minutes to an hour). Unfortunately the only way around it is as you've mentioned or just waiting for the timeout.
