Ordinarily, you'd be at the right spot, but we've recently launched a brand new community website... For the community, by the community.

Yay... Take Me to the Community!

Welcome to the DNN Community Forums, your preferred source of online community support for all things related to DNN.
In order to participate you must be a registered DNNizen

I agree.  If it were standard practice to:

1 - close off a thread due to age and inactivity

2 - close off a thread because it was degrading or trolling

But to close off a thread because someone from DNN has decided that in their opinion, it's not really important, really might not send out the right message.

Since making the forum visible on the menu, I've noticed a bit more activity.  This thread is a good place to consolidate the thoughts of the community and whether you like it or not, if you close this thread, another one of the same vein will be started.

Just my thoughts.

Please note, this thread is now 10 months and nearly 50 pages old and has covered a ton of topics - as such it's overdue being locked as it's no longer possible to follow and lots of good ideas/comment is getting lost. I'd recommend that people create new forum threads if they want to continue various topics (please do, lots of this is good feedback) - I'll leave this thread open until tomorrow to allow people to post links to any new threads, but after that it will be locked.

Well Cathal.. Is anyone complaining about the length of this thread? It got almost 12000 views which means it's being followed closely by many. Anyone who doesn't care about this thread can simply ignore it.

Anyway, if it gets closed, it will help me stop posting a lot in it. I am fine with it.

Plus I assume dnnsoftware would prefer for this unfavorable thread to disappear from the list of topics!

I expect the source package to run DNN exactly like the install package. The source is there for the people who want to look at the source. OK so I have to compile it. No big deal. It's a quick one time thing. But it has to install and work! I gave up on the source package because it just didn't work and I wasn't going to waste any more time on it. The source package is not an edge case. Look at the download numbers at Codeplex. Source downloaders are 33% of the number of the install package. That's a hefty number. You say you want to concentrate on the newbies. Isn't the web installer for newbies? It gets the lowest number of downloads.

I am saying that whoever packaged the source package and making it available for download, you need to do a quick test and see if it installs fine as a fresh install. It takes less than 5 minutes.

to be more explicit: if you want to use DNN, use install package. if you are a module developer, you might find it beneficial, installing symbols for debug. If you want to get grey hair (or loose most of it, as I did) by inspecting core code, use source package and install on top. Only if you want to tweak the core, you need to build DNN platform your own - but you should have some experiences and a reason to do so.

C'mon guys you cannot seriously call advising people to be more precise in individual new threads and then locking this thread censorship. Deleting it maybe, but not locking.

I recall when I very first made my steps onto the internet reading a post that said after the first seven contributions to a thread you can usually stop reading. It will have drifted off topic. This one has lasted way longer than seven, but it's also way off the original topic. Put it to bed and be more precise.

I disagree - one of the most interesting discussions was a comment thread on a 3rd party blog post, which covered nearly all aspects of ecommerce modules, lasting about 2-3 years. Focusing a discussion doesn't mean closing it down in my pov.
