SocialGroups module puts ajax onto a click event on the list of groups to join. my issue is that with tabs we have the module on the page multiple times and it adds this click action for every module to every link join.

I need a way to have it know to only add it once or perhaps the full script to know its already on page and not to run again.

well I guess there are 2 ways to do it - register the script in code behind with same name so it should only add once. my method because this js had control id's and stuff could not be inside a js file (perhaps put into inline but why bother)

so I just added some js to check if it already executed
if (typeof bOnPage === 'undefined') {
var bOnPage = "true";

...ajax code

}

this works
