Is there any documentation on how to use the DNN providers/controls?

I would expect them to be available in the toolbox but they are not there.

How do I for example use the DNNMenuProvider?

In fact, there doesn't seem to be any documentation on how to do things like this!

I think DNN needs some more practical examples e.g.

1) how to use the built in controls.

2) How to find out information about the logged on user.

etc..

I don't mean to sound negative but it seems that everyone thinks simple things like are obvious. For example what is the difference between NavigateURL & EditURL?

Where is the documentation that explains what each function does. Looking at the source code doesn't make it any clearer.

I can only assume that most users on this forum have been using DNN for years but for us newbies starting out it is very difficult for us for find our feet.

With regards the controls, i would recommend you look at the webcontrols project page , which lists demos, blog posts, and on the left hand side a link to project downloads where you'll find code, patches and documentation. If you also look at the latest documentation download you'll find a doc called "DotNetNuke Navigation WebControls.pdf" that should help.

With regards Mike's post, I agree, a 'cook-book' of common scenarios and code snippets would be very handy. Whilst you can look through the source code, and read the documentation to get your answers, a simple (ideally searchable) list would help. This is an area where I see the wiki module being of use as it would allow the community the ability to post snippets - at present this module is not quite production ready, when it is, I'll make sure to dedicate a section to this.

Thanks for you reply.

I will take a look at the documentation.

I am glad you agree with my sentiments about a Wiki/FAQ/snippet idea. I was trying not to appear negative but looking through the messages, the same issues seem to crop up.

DNN is a great framework and has saved me lots of time already.

no problem, we always welcome constructive criticism (BTW I've just realised I answered both your questions as though they were from 2 different people, sorry about that). Personally I'd love to start using the wiki today, as I think it would cut down drastically on forum issues, as well as expand quickly, but it requires so much work that we would be in danger of losing the data - so it was felt better to hold off for a month or two. Some of the forum moderators already have FAQ's on their own sites, so they can provide links rather than cut and paste the same answer - once the current release is out I hope to get someone to put an interim measue in place under the wki is live.
