A while ago (DNN 7.0.4) I had an issue with the password type setting (enablePasswordRetrieval and  passwordFormat in the web.config) having to be set to plain or encrypted (not hashed) to be able to create a new portal. This was clearly a bug, and is not the subject of this post. Changing the setting doesn't affect existing passwords, but I seem to remember that when changing a password, the password is saved using the new setting.

Now (DNN 7.1.2)  however, I notice that when I change the setting, this doesn't ever affect the way an existing password is stored, even when changing a password.

So when I set the setting to "plain text" a new user's password is stored in plain text. When changing the setting to "encrypted" and changing the user's password, dnn still saves the password in plain text.

Has there been a change in this behaviour, or is my mind playing tricks on me?

I think this is not a change in behaviour. I have not checked this, but I think DNN (by default) simply delegates to the underlying ASP.Net implementation. There is a per-user flag in the row that identifies the password format for that user is.

I think setting it, as you did, only affects users created after you make the setting change.

Ok, thanks.

I'll make a bug-report for it, because storing password in an other format than specified feels like a bug to me. Whether or not it has always been this way isn't really an issue.
