On the original attempt, I did change the application name in the WebMatrix wizard and had the failure I've already documented. That seems like a perfectly reasonable change to make to really reduce this to the absolute basics I did the following:

At the end - it failed again (with the error at the start of this thread).

I honestly don't know how I can make this any more straightforward. The instructions on the DNN site (following the URLs above) provide virtually no information - basically just implying that I run WebMatrix and install the DNN Platform.

I have a few years experience with DNN. I have run my site with it for several years, have varioius extensions installed, have custom URL redirect logic, , etc, etc. I don't use it every day so I get a bit rusty but, by the same token, I'm not a complete newbie. And yet the most basic possible installation is stumping me. Surely it shouldn't be this flaky.

This sort of error is usually an indication that your server ... Not the application - is setup incorrectly.

without seeing the actual server configuration ... My first port of call would be ... Asp.net not being properly or fully installed.

%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regiis.exe -i

%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.21006\aspnet_regiis.exe -i
Run these at the command prompt ...  This can happen if iis is installed after asp.net

the other possibility is the app pool running in the wrong bit mode ... Try setting the apppool to 32 bit ... Though this tends to more often be an issue with 3rd party modules running custom dlls

I attempted to replicate the OP's situation.

I could not install using Web Matrix because the installer insists on using .\SqlExpress. On my machine that's an older version that DNN does not work with.

I did notice that the Web Matrix installer says "IIS Express (required for Web Matrix)". Never tried it, but I recall Wes advising, only a few days ago, NOT to use IIS Express with DNN.

HTH.

Best wishes,

Thank you for the response. I did see SQL Server referenced when I installed through the WebMatix wizard.

By design, I am trying to keep my install steps as simple as possible so - as WebMatrix implies is fully supported - I didn't pre-install SQL Server. On the appropriate prompt, I saw "SQL Server (Not Installed)", accepted that and SQL Server Express was subsequently listed as one of the dependencies that would be installed. So, with all that mind, my expectation is WebMatrix takes care of installing SQL Server Express and - to get the basic installation up and running - I don't need to do anything myself for SQL Server to be installed.

Thanks.

Thank you, Wes. I have tried to keep my pre-installation as simple as possible. That means installing WS 2008 R2 SP1 "clean", adding the ASP.Net role, making sure all updates are applied, rebooting, etc. Beyond that I don't do anything specific. After the ASP.Net role is installed, through Server Manager, I see no errors, ASP.Net is shown to be installed in Server Manager and if I navigate to http://localhost I can see the default IIS web page. So, I have no reason to suspect (or any evidence) that ASP.Net is not installed and operable before I start the DNN installation. Further, when I run WebMatrix, the wizard seems to see the "Default Web Site" just fine. Finally, it would seem reasonable to assume that if anything as fundamental as ASP.Net was NOT installed then WebMatrix would either complain or prompt me to install the ASP.Net role. It does neither.
