We are in a preliminary analysis stage. We need to develop a site with projects, and the projects need to be separate.

I am only vaguely familiar with the features of Content Management Systems. I understand that they at least provide a way for members to sign in and manage content. I assume there are options for controlling whether content is personal or private. Is there a way for the content to be categorized into projects or groups such that a project's content is available to everyone in the project but it is not available anyone outside the project (unless specified otherwise)? Or is that more of a Social Media type of thing?

Actually I am only asking about DNN; does it have projects/groups.

DNN has a rich granular permissions architecture. It supports users, roles and permissions e.g. I could create a page or add a module and only allow users from a role called "marketing" to access it etc. In addition DNN has the concept of "social groups" -effectively mini-social networks where members of the social group can post on a facebook like wall, access documents etc. You can find lots of useful videos on site management at http://www.dnnsoftware.com/videos
