That's not what I think of as by the book.

Take the update package, unzip over your website folder.

Browse to web site; that causes the upgrade to run.

In principle - you should NOT be fiddling with the web.config file. I'll accept there are times when web config requires a bit of manual hacking, but not until after you try upgrading without touching it.

Best wishes,

Please follow the suggested upgrade path http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/Page/... and read the http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/Page/... before you are starting.

Upgrades from 4.x to 7.x Versions have a lot of Major changes to the code, Services, jQuery and jQueryUI library and the Default.css Stylesheet !

I would not use the install packages about it needed a bigger knowledge of the custom Settings and installed modules in the web.config file and manuell existing configuration on it. I suggest to use the upgrade packages, changing to SQL Server 2008 or higher,SQL compatibility Level 100 or higher on the database upgrade the System to use .NET 4.0 on IIS after upgrade to DNN 6.2.9 and before upgrading to DNN 7.x !

I suggest to use the upgrade packages, that did not override the web.config file and upgraded it to the needed settings. Newer Windows Systems needed to unblock the zip packages after download and before extract the files to upgrade the System. Always backup the database and all files (additional back up of the web.config file can help to solve time) before each upgrade.

Be aware if your modules supporting the newer DNN version and upgrade them if it is needed before upgrade to the next Version. Also be aware if your Skin is supporting the newer Releases!

Thanks for the response Matthias. That's what I've been trying to do. I forgot to mention that I began with version 4.0.2. Upgrades worked perfectly until the 4.3.2 to 4.3.3 upgrade. Even after the 4.3.3 failure the 4.3.4 and 4.3.5 reported no errors but only one of the zip files installed without errors. I've been resetting perms on the installation before each run in case that was the problem. The big problem I think is the fact that the 4.3.3 does not write the error log it asks you to look at.

The answer is: SQL Server 2012. Being given a target machine that would only run 2012 turned out to be the problem. I'm still upgrading but it's going much better on a desktop.
