I have a large multi-tenant DNN application with hundreds of portals and thousands of pages. Recently, a few portals are having a performance issue when load the "Page Management" module. The CPU on the database server spikes, read activity spikes to ~250/Mbps (data being transferred from SQL to application) . Worst of all, probably due to bad SQL server configuration, it freezes the entire application including all portals. (There are plenty of available IOPS and CPU on the server to handle more load, what can I do here?)

  • In general, the Page Management initial load time is horrible. What could be done to improve this?
  • How could I optimize my SQL server configuration so one out of control page request doesn't hang up the whole server?
  • What could it be about this single portal that makes Page Management so slow (vs other portals? # of pages is similar.)

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

if you are on DNN 7.1.2 or 7.2.0, you may run my TurboSQL script, which will solve all the issues.
Download latest version from https://dnntracker.atlassian.net/brow....
Please start with a database backup. Note: you may encounter issues, if a 3rd party module placed an FK on files or folders table, please check this prior to applying the script, you may remove the FK and add it back after applying the script.
You may try TurboSchema addon as well, but be aware that it needs to run TurboUnSchema before next platform update.

Note: you might encounter improved performance of your site, this is intended behavior ;)

Lucas, regarding your 3rd question perhaps https://dnntracker.atlassian.net/brow... is at fault (scheduled to be fixed in 7.2.2)

Thanks Cathal and Sebastian. I will definitely try the turbo scripts on a test server. (And thanks for putting effort into database performance optimization!)

I'm pulling out the debugger on this one.

I don't think the issue is related to database optimization, though. I feel there must be some data corruption with some portals. I recently downgraded this instance from Professional to CE (still a Social customer!)  The strange thing is, on other portals, this page takes very little DB activity and loads nearly instantly. It's just two portals I've identified that it's completely frozen.

I have 4 nodes clustered and all of the nodes get bottlenecked when the db server gets tied up on these two sites. So I don't think it's the runaway CPU issue. CPU load is normal and the issue is reproducible on the Page Management module.

I'll keep on digging. Any more ideas are very welcome.

I finally managed to download my website and database (over 10GB in all) get them setup and start the app when my VM on my mac died! Completely re-installing everything today. :)
