Hi - I am having trouble with spam registrations., on a number of DNN web sites.  They are clearly auto generated and the common factor is that they have spam advertising in the profile.

I cannot see the advantage to the spammer.  No other account on the site is going to know about these accounts, and the profiles will never be seen.

For the moment I have enabled CAPTCHA on the registration page.  I doubt this will keep them out for long.  Does anyone have a better solution?

Best wishes,
- Richard

they might try to provide direct links to the user profile page to improve ranking, AFAIK captcha is the only option to prevent them atm (unless you turn off registration completely in Admin > Site Settings)

Captcha and Verified registration are my recommendation. I'm battling the same thing right now on my largest site.

Just to add my .02: VERIFIED won't stop it on its own.

Also, most of these are generated by a bot of some kind. I had a registration notification on a personal site and later that day, got the notice on a work site from the same "user".

Idisabled registration (or using private) is the best solution, if using public ensure captcha is enabled - FYI I analysed a number of IIS logs and did some investigation to check if this was a security issue, or simply an automated bot that is doing registration. Based on my investigation it is simply a bot - note: there is one sublety you should be aware of if using custom registration pages - http://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?vie...
