you may simply remove the profile ore restrict permissions to hide it for anonymous users (and search engines)

Obviously the spammers are using the profile feature. Is there a way to hide the profiles? That in combination with Recaptcha would be a strong solution that takes away their motivation.

Mark - while removing the profile feature will remove the possibility of a spammer delivering a payload (spam links) removing the profile registration won't affect the targeting of your site - that's because the bot just looks for sites to pump registrations through - I doubt very much that the bots check to see if they are successful or not.   The only true deterrent is a stronger captcha or blocking the default registration URL, or disabling registrations entirely.

Thanks Bruce for the idea to block the default registration URL. Works great! This is a serious problem with those fake registrations and a captcha code that isn't really working. Have a website where the email password got changed but forgot to update on the website. So I got 25000 registrations within 3 weeks.

I had changed my Register to Join in the Site Language and later changed it back to register. I was getting spam accounts there after. Going to switch back to Join, another choice word to use is Enroll however a simple way to keep the default registration page and the only work around I found for changing the name, however I wasnt doing it for spam before. Now that I do get a bunch of spam I am thinking of changing back to join. Register works for me but the captcha needs beefed up. This kills the email servers sender score making it harder to communicate with the real users.

The 'Bruce Chapman' method doesn't work. I tried it and double checked that the default registration page could not be hit and verified that the site is sending a 404.

The bots are following the 'Registration' link on each page to reach whatever your registration page is. Seems like the form should allow you to add a custom question that only a human could answer. My DNN site is now practically useless and email server is being overrun with bots coming in with IP's from all over the planet.
