Since moving to DNN 7.2 our 404 pages have a new look; The gray funcky background rather then the plain white;
However instead of returning an ttp status code of 404 it returns a 500 status (internal server error) back;
Yes, the page says 404, the http return code says 500... (see for sample http://oxfordcounty.ca/pagenotfound);
If you check the response (In IE or chrome Developer Tools F12) you can see the 500 in the network tools;
Problem is that Google doesn't see the 404 either and reports the 500 as server error (and a lot of them)

Is there a setting to get the proper http response code in the 404 page or is this a bug?

Thanks,

John Oepkes...

it sounds like potentially a bug, but not one we've seen reported -Bruce described how 404's work in 7.2.0+ at http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community-... perhaps theres something there that could help (sorry, just passing through, don't have much time to look into it right now)

thanks for the response; your link to the 404 was indeed helpful.

the site was configured to show a custom 404 page through IIS (an aspx page with reference to <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="false" Inherits="DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ErrorPage" CodeFile="ErrorPage.aspx.cs" %>) and it is this file that gives the 500 HTTP status code; Still investigating why.

Main point is that DNN7 now has another mechanism to deal with a custom 404 error itself; I had however to change some settings manually (as I was upgrading from DNN6 rather then installing a ne DNN7) http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/Page/...

Anyway this seems to be working for what I need it for.
