I have encountered an odd issue with my contact forms- Recently, I've installed v7.2.1 of DNN on a new domain on my server. I have built in DNN for years, and I have NEVER had any problem setting up my SMTP settings and getting contact forms working.

But since I've installed this quarters new instance of DNN on my new portal, I have been getting an error message when testing contact forms. (even though when I test the SMTP settings it works properly, and the test works successfully).

The SMTP credentials I am using that is giving me this error, is working on hundreds of other websites built DNN (5.x, 6.x, 7.x). It's only been since I've installed v7.2.1 that I have gotten the following message.

Bad sequence of commands. The server response was: This mail server requires authentication when attempting to send to a non-local e-mail address. Please check your mail client settings or contact your administrator to verify that the domain or address is defined for this server.

I do not know if this is related to the newest instance of DNN, or just a cooicidence. It could have to do with my hosting provider (3essentaials).

Any tips or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few things, 1. in dnn 7.2.0 we added code to encrypt smtp password's - the API was updated to encrypt/decrypt as necessary, but if a module was not using the API methods (perhaps accessing the hostsettings table directly), I guess it would be possible to have some sort of issue - but it's hard to say as it's in a 3rd party module (do you have the name/code for it?). Secondly we did fix some issues where certain email requests that passed in username, password etc. when sending emails ignored those values and used host settings - this was an error, so we fixed it (i.e. if you call SendMail and provide an username/password/servername we now use them) - ironically this broke at least one module which was using Sendmail but was passing incorrect values - as we ignored those it worked, but once we fixed DNN their code failed until they changed it to use correct values. I guess this could be a possibility too, but it's hard to say without knowing the module/values passed

cathal connolly is usually right on everything.... I would check first the smpt settings under admin>Advanced Configuration Settings>smpt server. Make sure that the following is done:
SMTP Server and port: make sure you have the right info in there (i know go daddy is relay-hosting.secureserver.net)
SMTP Authentication: set to basic
SMTP Enable SSL: I have mine off but try on?
SMTP Username: Make sure it is a good email address..
I also have a module that I am building for sending emails from the site... If you want I could email you the code and you could try that... I know it works so far to send emails from the site through the smpt settings... let me know
