We are still running on DNN version 5.1 (due to a corruption issue on our installation) and the only way around this is to start again with a brand new install.

We'd like to avoid upgrading our site if possible (as we have over 100 pages) so don't want to start again if we can avoid it.

I was wondering - how secure this is ? (staying on an old version like 5.1) and is there any other precautions we can or should do if we stay on DNN 5.1?

you can check by going to http://www.dnnsoftware.com/platform/m... and entering your version - however that version suffers from some known critical issues so I would recommend an upgrade -at a minimum to 5.6.3 (as a critical issue was fixed in an earlier 5.6.x release), but ideally something in the 7.x branch. You might want to try creating a portal template (http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/...) and installing it into a new 5.1 release (alongside any installed modules/skins) to see if that get's you close to a copy that you could then upgrade

thanks,
we shall consider a new installation from scratch then, if its the way forward with regards to sorting security issues and
creating a portal template looks interesting.

you might also consider investigation into your database corruption in order to find an option to provide an option for upgrading - or at least export the site into a template for importing into a brand new DNN install of same version which is upgradable.
