Yes, you are correct - this isn't a poster child for best practices.  I have been a .NET developer for a very long time, and datasets are definitely a blast from the past.  

I agree...I think I am just over thinking it....confusing what I think are DNN practices with just old crappy code.  There has been more than one occasion where I've said, why, why are they doing XXX this way?

What you are looking at is most likely an old DAL1 based data provider and associated module
- there is nothing technically wrong with using that sort of methodology - since dnn still supports DAL1.

The thing to understand is that DNN does not enforce data management rules or processes
- you can actually use any methodology you like to access the database for you own custom modules.

If it is dal1 based - as cathal mentioned - you would need to at least update any relevant info classes u_EventsRow with the new field new property added as a get/set
and also update the controller code and provider code area.
