Some of the modules I have installed, install many sub modules and they litter the modules list. What's the advantage of creating submodules vs one module which has a tabbed interface and load a tab on demand only when a functionality is needed? A tabbed interface seems cleaner than using several sub modules in one page.

Generally it's based on a copmbination of developer preference and the application needs - for an application such as a blog where different "views" are appropriate on one page (e.g. a reading view, an editing view), a tabbed interface can make more sense as functions can easily be enabled/disabled. For modules such as a store where optional modules such as "top sellers", "advertisers", "related products" etc. exist, many times these make more sense in certain pages e.g. "top sellers" might be on the home page, whereas "advertisers" should be on all pages, and "related products" only makes sense on a product detail page.
