Hi,

Is there any documentation available on how to create a new language pack?

I would like to create my own Japanese language pack on an as-needed basis.
Meaning, I am happy to replicate en-US to ja-JP and then just chip away as needed through the language editor in Admin.

Is there documentation or tutorials out there on how to simply convert a language pack into another language pack, so that it can be translated?

Thanks,

Bruce

go to Languages in Admin menu and select action "create language pack". this provides you with options for language, component type and component, you are creating a package for.

Thank you Sebastian,

What I am really looking / hoping for is some simple step-by-step instructions on the process of converting my extracted language pack into the new language.
As I understand the "languages" in admin, it just lets you make a copy of whatever language(s) you have installed.
But what I want to do is create a Japanese language pack from scratch.

So I *think* what I need to do is start with, say en-US and, for example, replace any reference to en-US with "ja-JP".
What I am hoping for is a sort of "for Dummies" type explanation of which files need to be amended to create the new pack.

To start me off, all I want is a language pack that DNN identifies as Japanese, but will actually be identical to US English (until I start translating the bits I want translated).

I hope that makes sense :-)

Regards,
Bruce

Bruce,
to start from scratch, you go to Languages in Admin menu (without your target language installed).
Click "add language", select "Japanese (Japan)", select System as fallback language and click add.
Now there is a row in the languages grid for Japanese. Click the pencil in column "System"(!!), which will open the language editor.
You get not the first file already selected (GlobalResources.resx) and a list of all resource keys, the right one editable to replace English text with Japanese one. Now translate all keys within the file and save (or save after every portion of about 20 keys - my advice), select the next file in the tree on the left and repeat.
continue
continue
continue
When you are finished, you may use Resource Verifier (in Admin Languages) to check for files still missing.
In the editor you should check "Highlight missing keys", which will show you after saving changes, which keys are still the same as in English (does not properly work with all HTML containing keys).
Last but not least, use "create language pack" to package your files for distribution.

One more tip: I always use a 2nd browser tab to check, where the keys are used and (after finishing a module) whether all keys have been properly translated.

HTH

PS: translating all DNN core framework is quite an exhausting job and will take at least 10 liters of coffee or tea.
you should start with all core elements, before translating the modules.
If you encounter missing keys for translation please report to JIRA (http://support.dnnsoftware.com).

If you have other questions, don't hesitate to ask :)
