I am new to the DNN working on www.industrial-chic.com. Websites settings is telling me the site needs critical updates. Is this mandatory for the site to function better or am I okay staying with 5.02.03 vs  07.02.02? Thank you in advance!

Version 5.2.3 is about 3 years old and there are a number of security bulletins covering your version, including default HTML Editor (FckEditor 2.0.4, which is known to have a significant bug, your should at least install its Successor CKEditor 4 - available for download from http://dnnckeditor.codeplex.com and makes sure to uninstall(!) Fckeditor).
In general, you will gain a number of features when upgrading to DNN 7 (in multiple steps via 5.4.4, 5.6.8, 6.1.5, 6.2.9, 7.1.2), like improved control panel (RibbonBar), support for mobile sites, versioning in HTML module and a couple more - with the downside that newer versions are slower.

Thank you for the quick replay! What is the install process for a update of this nature seeing as I have to update from 3 years back?

- backup all files and database
- download, unblock and unzip DNN Upgrade (!) package hierarchically into your DNN folder (or unzip and copy over)
- browse your site (or browse /install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade)
- upgrade 3rd party modules, providers and language packs

I've been playing with upgrades like this. Upgrading from 5.6.8 generates an error between 7.1.2 and 7.2.2. If you go directly to 7.1.2 and then do the upgrade to 7.2.2, all should be well. There may be other module issues that you will have to deal with, but the basic DNN upgrade will/should work.
