I am working with a client that is interested in hosting DNN on their web server, but their IT department is concerned about the security of their SQL Server databases which are currently behind their firewall and are currently only used for their  intranet which holds a lot of secure information. Their questions were beyond my understanding, and I was hoping that i might be able to get some help on this forum.

What is the server and database architecture?

How are they securing the database on the outside?

What are the recommendations for the database?

What is the most secure model?

I am really just in need of any information or dnn setups that will convince them that DNN will be able to be installed on their web server without risk of compromising the security of  their servers.

Thanks you in advance.

DNN Platform is quite secure (there is no 100% security in software development beyond "hello world" samples ;)). DNN has its own security team of very knowledgable guys from the dev team and community.

Having SQL server in local network is a common scenario for DNN - you just need to open a port in the 2nd firewall for communication and should use a dedicated sql server account for the webserver to access the database. The "Hardening DNN Security" guide also points out, how to use a second account for upgrades and other DDL tasks (you need to configure it in your web.config in SQL Server section near the end). Unfortunately, I am not able to locate the technical whitepapers on dnnsoftware.com on first look.

It's also used by the US Department of Defense (Dnn Customers) - Les Benito was even a Keynote speaker a couple years ago at DNN World (youtube)

(Thanks for referencing Keynote Scott )
