I used to work with dotnetnuke in 2006-2010 and did like the brand dotnetnuke a lot but why the change to DNN? The brand was very well known. I hardly recognized the website dnnsoftware and thought I was lost

1) Is dotnetnuke open source anymore?

2) Are there a company or an free open source community behind dotnetnuke/dnn nowadays (2014)?

1) Is dotnetnuke open source anymore? - yes, it's just called the DNN Platform now instead of DotNetNuke or DotNetNuke Community edition.

2) Are there a company or an free open source community behind dotnetnuke/dnn nowadays (2014)? yes, DNN Corporation. The business model is still the same i.e. we sell the Evoq products and a portion of the money made there is used to pay for the staff who work exclusively on the DNN Platform editions. You can view the changelog's at https://dnntracker.atlassian.net/brow... (and notice that we're ever increasing the amount of items worked -for 7.3.0 we're over 400 now)

The DotNetNuke core is now called the DNN_Core and is still very much open source and always will be.

The name DNN is part of the commercial rebranding undertaken by DNN Corp when they formed a commercial entity a couple of years back.  That company is the operator of this site and the overseers of the primary dnn_core distribution and the main group that contribute commercially to the dotnetnuke core.
