I read the Install PDF that still only talkes about upgrading from 3x to 4x and nothing in this document seems to pertain to an upgrade from 4.0x to 4.3x... so for someone who has no idea and had forgotten where he placed his cristal ball...how do I upgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.3.1?

Any help or advice would be great.

Will,

To upgrade from 4.0.x to 4.3.x all you need to do is unzip the contents of the latest version over your existing version and then navigate to your dotnetnuke virtual directory from a web brwoser, the installer will automatically run and indicate that it is upgrading.

Don't forget to migrate your old data provider and the validation/decryption key from your old web config file to the new one.

womally, I don't know what kind of access you have to your installation, but there is a much better way.

  1. Add a new Alias to your installation called Upgrade.MySite.Com
  2. Backup your DB
  3. Create a copy of your current site at a new location on the server.
  4. Create a new DB and restore your backup as the new DB - Be carefull here and pay attention to the restored db file locations! Make sure you don't overwrite the exisiting DB files!
  5. Overwrite the copied site files with the latest release files.
  6. Make the required changes to the release.config (keys and db information, you should be pointing to the db you just created).
  7. Rename web.config to web.config.old
  8. Rename release.config to web.config
  9. Create a new site in IIS for Upgrade.Mysite.Com with it's home directory at the new installation. (This assumes you can manage the domain name as well)
  10. Navigate to Upgrade.Mysite.Com and your upgrade should take place.
  11. In IIS disable the Upgrade site and edit the properties of mysite.com to point to the new sites home directory.

Your done, now a hit while your making the changes won't impact a thing and the move will be completly transparent to visitors.
