Hi All,

I've been successfully using a DNN portal - Version 5 - For many years now. It's taken a while to get there, but it's stable, works 100% of the time and is customized for our purposes.

The time has now begun to begin the development of the successor, and as DNN has provided so useful as the underlying Framework, I think we'll stick with it.

But, before I get started I just wanted to ask what the core differences are, if anyone know's of any useful resources on what's changed in regards to module development, installation etc... and are there any upgrade niggles I'd need to be aware of?

I've had a search in the forums but I've not found anything substantially useful so wanted to just ask the questions.

Many Thanks,

John

John,

I think this is a good decision, and there are indeed a lot of nice new features since DNN 5. I would recommend installing DNN 7.3.0 on a test server, and play around a bit.

The most "confusing feature" at the first moment is that pages appear in View mode by default - if you want to edit content, you have to go to Edit mode.

What I like most since then is that multi lingual content (or dynamic localization) improved a lot since the first steps in DNN 5.5. Also the Drag & Drop features are really nice. Another good thing is the "Portal Groups" feature (which has an interface only in the professional version, but there is a module on Codeplex that uses this API - https://dnnportalgroups.codeplex.com/), the support for mobile devices, the Social API, the support for Windows Azure...

There is a lot more - maybe you tell a bit about your needs, then it's easier to tell you what could be interesting.

Best wishes
Michael

There isn't a good place to capture all the changes - you can "mine" them from the various release blogs here, or from the comments on the codeplex releases (e.g. 7.3.0 is at http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/releas... and you can click older releases). We used to ship a "whats new" with each release and that was handy but was tricky to manage all the translations and often caused release delays, so it was removed in favour of a template with links to dynamic content (such as wiki/blogs/forums/exchange etc.). Personally I find the "developer quick starts" at http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki to be a handy way to see the major new features, but I think if I get a chance I will create a wiki page that summarizes the major changes between each release and link it on the wiki homepage.
