I don't think the problem is just about the SQL queries. When compared with the fast 4.x version, DNN currently has a lot more components, DLLs, etc.
Compare the /bin of a 4.x and a 7.x site (and the memory usage, the compile time, etc.). The difference is huge.

In bench testing with 7.3 including using the minified and combined scripts, Charles had stats that it was almost as fast as 4.9.5 - to within hundredths of a second.  Of course that is for an out-of-the-box install, not sure what other menus etc increased a 4.9x build by.

There's no reason why future tweaks can't keep up this level of performance and increase it.

Of course the biggest cause of slow sites is slow 'other stuff' that is added to pages.

Any idea how to make the initial (each time, after a recycle) compile time? It takes a lot of time even with batch="false" and/or optimizeCompilations="true"

PS: and I can't but repeat: if you need DNN 4 performance with DNN 7, try my TurboScript (dnnscript.codeplex.com)!
