this can happen if a page has not finished loading and you cause a post-back (e.g. by changing a drop-down box that is set for auto page post back) - does this occur everytime (e.g. even if you leave it a few seconds)?

I had an error like that but it was because I wasn't letting the page fully load like cathal connolly said.
