I am a complete novice with DNN, so hopefully this isn't a repeat topic, but... I have several web sites all of which can benefit from DNN. I have written chunks of very similar applications and want to leverage the abilities (and of course give back any useful code I stumble across

That said, most of the inexpensive hosting out there doesn't allow for SQL (either main or Express). It is also heavier than I'd like to run for my own local test machine.

Has anyone taken a crack at writing a non-SQL data adapter? Today I use persisted DataSets (via XML) which seem to work very well and are highly transportable. Before diving into modifying DNN to work I'd appreciate hearing any feedback.

Thanks,

Paul

You are some affordable hosters that do provide SQL server.  I use webhost4life and their cheapest package with SQLServer is 9.99 a month.  Their support is good and they have a good referal program that could allow you to earn enought with 4-5 referals to pay for your hosting feel.  I use them for all my "budget consience customers" and have not had any major problems (most sites have 99% uptime).  If you do decide to go with them please use the link below so I get credit for the referral.

Also, you can check out my companies web site here

Another option is to find a hoster that support SQL Express and use them, since SQL Express if free.  But I would be surprised if you found anyone under $9.99 a month that supported SQL Express and then you'd have to ask whether it was worth a little more just to get an account that has SQL Server space included.

Fair enough and good information if I wind up blocked on this.

But I really would prefer something even lighter than SQL Express. I currently have a small "database" of ~1.5MB which loads very quickly as XML written to disk. It's simple and light and I can deploy the web template to any server without worrying about connection strings, etc.

I started an XmlDataAdapter class but need to dig into DNN for the places that it uses the SqlDataAdapter today.

The firebird project is something to watch but until it is officially released not a valid for production use.  Plus, from what I hear to configure the FireBird database is not something that is easily done and could cause more problems wiht little support until more DNN users get experience using it.  IMHO your best bet is to go with SQLExpress 2005.
