I am currently working with a company on an eCommerce application.  In looking through their application and the way that localization is handled in DNN I should be able to handle much of the conversion with core DNN functionality.  One area which seems to present problems is currency.  Is there any windows APIs that would map a CultureInfo/Locale to a currency for that culture?  How are others solving this problem in DNN?  I have seen plenty of examples of how to format a number for a given currency based on a culture, but have not been able to determine how to find the currency given a specific culture.  For example, if I know that the culture is fr-FR, how can I determine that Euro is the default currency and that Franc is an alternate currency?

For one thing.. The franc is the pre-Euro currency of france, and by no means the alternate currency (you can only exchange Francs at the central bank, nowhere else)

I never used this, but you should be able to do something like this:

currencySymbol as String = threading.thread.currentThread.currentUICulture.NumberFormatInfo.CurrencySymbol

That should get the correct currency symbol..

cheers

Erik,

A Couple Items.  The Franc was just an example, but if some website owner wants to allow customers to pay in Francs, that is their business.

As for the Currency Symbol:  I actually need more information than just the symbol.  I need the name, and the shortname (not sure if it an ISO name or not).  For example, for en-US the site might display:  Dollars or USD or $.  The Currency Symbol would just provide the $ which is not enough to distinguish between US Dollars and Canadian Dollars both of which use the $ symbol.

i think the only thing you can do is to provide your own lookup table based on locale. A great please to put that would be the portals list function, much like we already do with country names. Wikipedia gives a good list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_4217

As ever.. the asp.net localization routines are falling short (IMHO)

cheers,

Erik
