Installed 3.3.2 using Hostonce (hostonce.com) as a host provider. Got the following error message:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

I've changed database name, user id, user password. I've also changed dbo to the name of the database in the web.config file, so I haven't forgotten anything.

I've also changed the <customErrors mode="Off"/> so that I can see the custom error message, but still get this error message.

HELP!

Clear you browswer cache, becuase if CustomErrors is set to Off you should see a detailed error.  You might also double check to make sure the change was saved.  Another thing you might try it to have them restart you application so you know there is nothing cached on server as well.  Once you can get a more detailed error the more likely someone here can help you.

I contacted my host provider about clearing the cache, etc. and they responded:

    1. we do not employ any caching so this is not an issue.

    2. If you following the instructions in the error message (change the
    customErrors mode to "off") then you should be able to view any error
    messages.
    If you still cannot, please ensure that your we.config (nor any other
    scritps) are attempting to bypass the default server authentication or
    authorazation.

Can anyone explain to me how I complete 2, as I have no idea how to make sure scripts are not "attempting to bypass the default server authoentication or authorization".

Your hosting company should be able to look at that for you and help you determine what is goign on.  Also, when I mentioned clearing the browser cache I meant in IE under Tools/Internet Options/General Setting Tab.  Click clear cache and make sure you check the box that says include content.

Got it working. After a little back-and-forth with my host provider they responded:

Okay, we are finally making progress....I have changed the asp.net version to 2.0 for you and also fully reset thepermissions on your domain.

The error message appeared after this. Thanks.
