After seeing a post for this great free module site, I decided to check out some of the downloads. Now that I've got them, how can I add them to DNN? There was no install docs with the modules I downloaded, and the Online Help for Adding a New Module doesn't seem to be sufficient, because it's a very short document and doesn't address several obvious questions. I searched through the forums for "adding a module" and "installing a module", but there were literally no threads that matched either search. Am I really the only person out of the entire userbase of DNN that is installing modules, or just the only person who didn't intrinsically "get it"?

1.) The Adding a New Module helpfile indicates in a step that I should "Click the Browse button and select a file". Great - this module comes with about 35 files. WHICH ONE?

2.) The Adding a New Module helpfile indicates in a step that I should "Click Add to add the file to the files to upload list.". I tried that, and DNN told me "Invalid File Extension For Custom Module...<filename>". I tried this with several file types, and got the same error message. This includes graphics, XML files, and the *.DNN file.

3.) I tried the Module Validator, which was fortunately a little more helpful - at least it gave me some information! I selected the *.DNN file in the module, and it told me it was valid. However, it gave me no hints or tips on how to actually INSTALL the darn thing, just that it *was* valid.

So seriously... how do you install a module into DNN?

You know it's very easy to take things for granted, since alot of us have been around for about three years, and the main changes we've had to deal with is where the link to install them is.  I've created a small video that explains about installing a module, setting permissions and adding it to your page.  It's here (for registered users)

And yes what makes it even more challenging is the different way some developers package them.  Generally what I do is unzip everything first - have a look at it - developers generally package using the extension  - modul_install.zip - The install file is what you add to the window to install.  Some developers use module_pa.zip - that's the old term which was used and it stood for Private Assembly - being the *ready to use* finished product but it was deemed to be a little technical - and I can understand that - since I'm not a developer and have had to ask a few people what some words mean.

I think the general consensus was to call it by the module name - and install.zip means it's an install file - and modulename_source.zip are the files that make up that module which developers are able to download and use should the developer make it available.

I hope this has clarified a few things for you and that you're able to move ahead and confidently install the modules that you are wanting to use.

Thanks for the question, it comes up from time to time.

Nina, this really did the trick. Actually, what helped the most was that you indicated that I should just point it to the .zip file, instead of unpacking the zip file and trying to find an install source within it. Near as I can tell, that's not spelled out in the help file here. After just pointing it to the zip file, I was able to install all my modules within 2 minutes with not so much as a hiccup from DNN. Way cool!

After installing, I went ahead and looked at your helpful instructional video, and that was great too. I know the mods and devs are busy working on stabilizing the release candidate, but is there someone we could petition to get more helpful info put into a help file for the module install? You've done a fantastic job with that, and it'd be neat to see it utilized to its fullest potential.
