This issue has been cropping up for quite a while now and I would like to know if the DNN dev team has something in the pipeline to resolve the problem of spam registrations.

We have quite a few clients running DNN as their CMS and the spam registrations are starting to become an administration nightmare. We have tried the options mentioned in previous posts and turned off user registration completely if possible, however, there are cases where this is not viable.

One site in particular is problematic as the user registration has been integrated into their Pastel accounting system - this resulted in them having a lot of invalid accounts in Pastel which needed to be cleaned up on a regular basis. We have changed the site registration to "Private" for now so that we can weed out the spam registrations before they are integrated, but this still involves a fair amount of manual sifting through registrations on our side as we are getting about 50 -60 spam registrations per day.

We have added Google's Recaptcha to the registration page but still get a couple of spam registrations a day. How are the spammers able to create accounts when the registration process requires a captcha?

Is there another way in DNN to register for an account which doesn't use the registration page that is open to spammers?

nothing extra to worry about here, simply spoken spammers have gotten better at automating cracking captcha images via OCR - recaptcha 2.0 is currently the best option (one of the last comments at http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community-... has a module to help with this)

The DNNSoftware Wiki page had a recommended procedure:  http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/...

But I still got SPAM registrations after applying it.  The below addition to the Web.Config has worked for me so far.

If you are using IIS 7, you can turn on the request filtering and add the following code in web.config.
<    system.webServer    >
    <    security>
        <    requestFiltering>
            <    denyQueryStringSequences>
                <    add sequence="ctl=register" />
                <    add sequence="/register" />
            </    denyQueryStringSequences>
        </    requestFiltering>
    </    security>
< /    system.webServer   >

This will deny the querystring "?ctl=register"

the web.config modification just removes a single entry for Spammers, the best Option might still be integrating re-captcha for Registration.
