Interestingly my emails to above recipient (and others) apparently get delivered sometimes but at other occasions they do not. And when they don't I don't always receive "the undelivered mail" message.
This idea of relaying is mentioned in this thread here.
Funny though the problems started only when I moved to arvixe. So the logic is they are missing something.

Any elaboration on this is welcome as the arvixe people say everything is ok at their end and my system (meaning DNN) is to be blamed.

I am having this same error for the password.
This is what I see when I am entering the credentials and click on Test SMTP: http://www.screencast.com/t/nzb0mqjC

Afterward I click on Update and then click on Test SMTP again: http://www.screencast.com/t/CgO3LsZx

Just as Greg Greensky noted, the password length has changed.

Do you have by any chance a localized website in DNN? Which version are you on?

I don't have one here at work, but I want to test this at home soon when I get an opportunity. I'm getting this error on 7.3.4. we have another instance on 7.4.0 that I will test tomorrow.

AFAIK there is an issue with SMTP Settings in Admin > Site Settings.
if possible, use the ones from Host Settings instead.
