I'm considering updating a clients website web.config file to require unique email addresses for registration. My question is, will this affect currently registered users (some of the existing accounts have duplicate email addresses) or only user registrations going forward?

Thanks for the information. But it appears that his blog post is about setting the "Email Address as Username" option in the user settings (via the portal) instead of setting the "require unique email" component to "true" in the web.config file. Or is it the same thing? And either way, there's no issue with me editing the user accounts to remove duplicate email addresses. It's a development site right now so there are only a few users, but when officially launched there should be ~1,000 users registered fairly quickly.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how this process works (or I'm not explaining it very well) -- I don't want to use email addresses for login.

I did see in the "user account settings" you can select "use email address as username" which I assume is what you were referring to.

But, I still intend for new users to provide a normal user name (not their email address). I just wanted to disallow an email address to be used more than once to avoid users creating multiple accounts with the same email address. This field is titled "Requires Unique Email" and defaults to "false" and cannot be changed via the portal control panel. The only way to change it to "true" is to change the setting from "false" to "true" in the web.config file.
