Jim, yes, in your case you only need to modify value in web.config.

Hello,

what I need is a "soft" solution, i.e. that new users are rejected if their mail address already belongs to another user already registered and old users with duplicate mail address are allowed - I see that login for such users is rejected, but without error message.

Would it be a good idea to define an insert trigger on [dbo].[Users] that reports an error when new user data is entered with the same mail address?

The trigger solution is a bit dirty because the transaction is in an undefined state after the RAISERROR and an unexpected error is displayed.
So I checked the DNN code for a while and found a place in Register.ascx.cs where I could build in my check using UserController.GetUsersByEmail.
Now, new users can't use an existing mail address but existing users can continue existing.
