If the site does not work before you start the upgrade it's not likely to work afterwards.

I was able to access the site and browse the pages, but it was not completely working - I could not access any of the admin menus without error 500.

I think it needs to be working before you start. It does not seem reasonable to expect an upgrade to fix an already broken site.
