Hello DNN,

My goal is to upgrade from 6.2.9 to 7.x, but I've been very unsuccessful.

I attempted two upgrades from 6.2.9 to 7.1.1, and then from 6.2.9 to 7.1.2. Both times, DNN told me the upgrades were successful, but when I clicked "click here to view your site", it sent me back to the upgrade wizard (the place where it asks for your username and password before it begins the upgrade process). Stranger than this, when the upgrades were in process, there were no "success" or "failure" prompts after each action took place (see the image link below to understand what I mean). I had the same problem when upgrading from 5.5.1 to 5.6.8, and from 5.5.1 to 6.1.5. Fortunately, the upgrade worked from 5.5.1 to 6.2.9.

Then I tried to upgrade from 6.2.9 to 7.3.3, and then from 6.2.9 to 7.3.4. Both times, DNN returned the following message:

 ==============

Server Error in '/’

Application.Runtime Error.

Description: An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated.

==============

It’s worth mentioning that, after each failure, I did not need to restore the database, only the site files; however, I imagine that I’ll need to restore the database if I need to revert back to 5.5.1 from 6.2.9.

Please help, and thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

My DNN Environment:

  • IIS 7
  • .NET Framework 4.0
  • SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition (I believe)
  • Windows 2008R2 (I believe)

P.S. Mr. Hammond and Mr. Nguyen have attempted to help me on the Community Exchange.

did you make sure, compatibility Level of your database is set to 100 or above (in database properties)

Hello Sebastian,

Chris Hammond gave me enough hints to figure out there was a glitch in my extraction process on the upgrade package's zip files (my computer was excluding files during extraction). By fixing this, I was able to get my DNN upgraded from 6.2.9 to 7.1.2 like you suggested I do in this post. Now I'm having problems with upgrading from 7.1.2 to 7.4.0. I get the Runetime error I described above, but this time I'm certain I'm extracting the files correctly.

I'm going to ask my System Administer if the compatibility level of our database is set to 100 or above; however, would you know if there would be other reason why I may be getting this Runetime error?

Thank you very much,

Akheem

if the error is solved by restoring files, I assume, it is fixed by an application restart - just opening and re-saving web.config should have same effect.
This might happen immediately after the upgrade but should not be necessary afterwards. Please check file system permissions as well, DNN needs to be able to create and delete files (e.g. cache files).

Good morning Sebastian,

Checking the permissions seems to have done the trick. I was able to go through the upgrade process from 7.1.2 to 7.4.0; however, after clicking "Click here to view your site", I was thrown the following error. Would you happen to know why this has happened? Thanks again.

 -------------------------

500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.
