I recently upgraded my site from 7.4.0 to 7.4.1.  When I use Internet Explorer to click on a link associated with an exe file, Internet explorer asks me to select which program to open the file.  The file's extension is missing.  This problem does not exist with FireFox, it works just fine.  (I have several internet explorer users reporting this problem with my site.)

When the link was created, I checked the track option and the link contains linkclick.aspx verbage.  I thought it might have a problem.  I recreated the link without that option and the problem still exists.

When I look at the html link, I see this fragement at the end "/WxMesgNetUpd41.exe?ver=2015-05-17-081009-937"  It appears that the html editor, or file picker, is appending "?ver=2015-05-17-081009-937".   If I remove this from the created html, internet explorer starts back working.

This additional information does not appear to affect firefox, but internet explorer has issues with this added information.  I don't know if the problem is due to a security update to internet explorer or if this was the result of me upgrading my site to 7.4.1.

Has anyone else run into this problem?  Does anyone have suggestions on how to address this problem?  I hate to go back and recreate all of the "exe" links on my site.

The core generates URL's to reference images and other resources. A change in 7.4.1 adds the file version parameter (ver=[file timestamp]) to these URLs. The purpose of the change is to allow control over browser side caching for these resources.

It is under the control of a setting. In Site Settings | Page Output Settings you may turn it off by unchecking "Cachebust resource URIs"

You are correct that the URL is generated when using the file picker tool in the html editor; the generated URL is then saved by the html editor. You will need to regenerate any links that show the problem. For links in the html editor this will only be ones created after the upgrade.

Thank you for the fast response.  Unchecking that option corrected the problem with Internet Explorer.
