The menus in DNN are a pain point for me. My sites typically have three or four different menus

  • Main Nav: Most of the main pages, based on hierarchy for the most part
  • Top Nav: displays at the very top of site, usually will have links of letter importance. Contact Us, Careers etc.
  • Child Page Left Navs: Based on hierarchy
  • Footer: generally same as main nav with the top nav links worked in.

For the topNav/Footer what I've been doing is creating a html module set to display on all pages and code these in by hand. These is kind of a pain though when we want to move things around, and easy to mess up for those not used to html.

Is there anything in DNN similar to the wordpress menu plugins that allow you to define a menu and assign page structures to it in the admin?

Hi Andrew,

There is the DDR Menu skin object, this is the main menu system in Dnn. You can have as many DDR menus on a skin as you want and you can also set which tab node to display, this can be a state node or dynamic. Have a look here for more info.

There is also a Links module that you can use, this is found here.

Another option is to use the Console module which is installed as standard.

If you want control of the code you could use the Razor module and program the navigation yourself.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Geoff.

Thanks Geoff,

I'll have to look into the Links/Console modules. Does the links one have a docs website hiding somewhere?

I have tried the DDR menu, but run into this issue.

Say we have these pages at the root level: Home, Products, Solutions, About, Contact Us.

If I want Home, Products, Solutions in one menu and About, Contact Us in a different one, there doesn't seem to be a way to split them apart.

Please let me know if I'm missing something about the DDR menu :-)

Geoff is right, DDR is the way to go. You can even use it as a module  and not in the skin if it's a menu you only need for a specific small case instance.

DDR is the way to go. It would be nice to create custom menu's as easily as you can in WP.
