I have a site site to private registration and would like to make some modifications to the notifications that are sent, but am not sure if it's possible or the right place to start.

This is what I'm trying to figure out how to do:

  1. Add a BCC email to the user registration notification.
  2. Send to a different email than the site admin when a user registers
  3. Send a notification to the user when their account is approved by an admin.

Any tips would be appreciated.

You might be a candidate for Data Springs' Dynamic Login module, or one like it. The costs $199, but has a wealth of features that you can use to completely customize the registration process. You'll easily spend several times that trying to do it yourself, and you'll probably not have as good a solution.
