Hello !

I have a web-site, sucesfully running on DNN 03.03.05 from year 2006. The server software is Windows Server 2008, .NET 2.0, the application running in the Classic application pool.

For many reasons (security, development issues e.t.c.), I've decided to fresh-up DNN engine as well as server enviroment to latest stable versions.

I understand, that is a long road, but at now I need at least a route to complete this task.

So the question is: how this task would be accomplished ?

Should I perform the step-by-step upgrade between major version (3 => 4=> 5=> 6=> may be 7 ) ?

Which .NET version I must use at end of this process? 4.6 ?

Any suggestions welcome. If I can complete this task, I'll describe full process step-by-step in this forum, as well as all issues.

Thanks,

Oleg.

Oleg,

this is propably quite a challenge. First I would try to follow the suggested upgrade path, but you will propably run into a lot of issues with the modules you use and the skin. So if the site is not too big and/or does not have too many users I would consider to rebuild it from scratch.

Otherwise: Don't do it on the productive system. Copy your site and database to a testing environment and try it there. First I would get rid of all the modules that are not in use, just uninstall them so you don't have problems with them after the upgrade. Make a backup of the site and the database, try the (next) upgrade step, test if everything works, try to find module upgrades that run with the "new" version and if everything runs fine, create an upgrade package that includes the new modules for this step. Eventually change the framework (DNN 4 needs ASP.Net 2, and DNN 7 needs ASP.Net 4, somewhen you have to use the integrated pipeline mode instead of the classic one). Repeat these steps until you reach the desired version (I would suggest the most recent one). Always write down what you have done at which step. This could be a very useful information.

I once upgraded a site from DNN 4.9.5 to 7.2.x, the whole process to find out which modules had to be upgraded to which version at which step lastet nearly a week.

Good luck and Happy DNNing!
Michael

Michael, thank you very much for help and useful advices. Great link for suggested upgrade path. Of course, I'm ready for plenty of issues and will perform step-by-step moving in the testing enviroment. You absolutely right about change from classic to integrated pipeline mode.

Depending on the size of the site, it might be better to start with a 7.4.0 DNN instally, and migrate the site via good old "cut and paste."

Just a thought ... (and I'm in the process of helping upgrade a 5.x site which, among other horrors, has a large number of important custom modules ...)

you may follow my upgrade receipt: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/18...
Be aware, that for upgrades from a version less than 4.6.0, you have to perform changes in web.config manually, usually by using a text comparing tool and copying your individual mods into the new release.config included with DNN.
