One more Idea: how many images are there in the folders selected for page icon / 2nd icon, or - if empty - in top level portal folder?

Not sure exactly which folder you're talking about, sorry. Can you give me a little more direction?

if you enter page settings, the selected icons for page (if any associated) are displayed, otherwise the website root folder. DNN scans each file in these folders upon load of the settings page, therefore it helps to have only a few images in these folders.

If I know what you're talking about, there isn't one specified that I'm seeing, but the file location is set to root.  There are just a handfull of image files in that folder, but there are a lot of subfolders.
